Kids listen as Fr. Mark reads the prayer on the back of the name tag we affixed to each backpack.
On Sunday, Aug. 20 we celebrated our Third Annual Blessing of the Backpacks! Huge thanks to Dr. Shirley Squier, who put it all together, and to Becky Jamison, who printed the tags with each child's name on the front and a prayer on the reverse side. Shirley did the laminating and preparation of the tags. Becky had printed up postcards announcing the event and sent them to all of the children (20 of them). Shirley sent out a Public Service Announcement to the paper and radio station. Both responded positively with an article in the Daily Record and announcements on the radio station. As a result we had 13 children and one adult (Nancy Kovalcik) who had their backpacks blessed.
All gather around the backpacks for the Blessing Prayer.
Here is the prayer printed on the back of each name tag: A Prayer from the People of Christ Episcopal Church Dear Lord Jesus, you yourself grew and learned as a child in Nazareth. As this new school year begins: Open the eyes of this child to notice new friends; Open the ears of this child to hear sound teaching; Open the mind of this child to learn new and wondrous things; Open the mouth of this child to speak kindness and respect; Open the heart of this child to love as you do; Open the spirit of this child to your ever-faithful Presence; That following in your footsteps, this your child may grow in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and all your people (Lk 2:52). AMEN
