Keeping Easter at Home
While many households observe forty days of Lent, they find that Easter ends after one Sunday. In fact, the observance of Easter continues for fifty days, until Pentecost on Sunday, June 4th. Finding small ways to continue the Easter celebration helps proclaim the importance of Easter in the Christian life. Here are some suggestions for keeping Easter in your household:
- Make or buy a card welcoming Charleigh Gould to the Christ Episcopal Church family (c/o Chad & Diandra Gould, 3292 Crawford Dr., Canon City, CO 81212)
- Revive an ancient paschal tradition. In “olden” times, homes were blessed at Easter. Invite Fr. Mark to bless your home during the Easter season (prior to June 4th). Invite friends and neighbors to come to your home that day and celebrate the season with you.
- Bring reminders of new life into your home – flowering branches, blooming bulbs, spring flowers, etc.
- Revive the custom of Easter visits where households made it a custom of paying Easter visits to homebound individuals of their communities. Such visits are even more appropriate today when the number of institutionalized members of our communities has grown so much. Nursing home residents are obvious and important examples, but we can also extend our visiting to include prisoners, those living at Villa Carina, and homeless individuals at Loaves & Fishes.
- Decorate a large, white candle as a Paschal Candle for your home. Light it for the evening meal at home during the Easter season.
- Buy 50 postcards and send a daily card to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. (or email)
