July 30: "Christ Church in our Community" Day
Sunday, July 30 will be a special day for all of us at Christ Church! We will be focusing on how Christ Church makes a difference in our community. We will have VISITORS on that day!
1. Our first Guest visitor will be DeeDee Clement, Executive Director of Loaves and Fishes. For over a dozen years she has overseen and supervised all the many ministries offered through Loaves and Fishes: the Food Pantry, the Clothing Warehouse, the Homeless Shelter, Restoring Hope (a rapid-rehousing program for the homeless), and New Creations Inn (a 1- or 2-year-long transitional housing program). This coming Thursday at 3:00 pm (July 20), there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for an amazing new project, "Journey Home." (Click here for an Invitation to the groundbreaking!) Journey Home will be a 30 unit apartment building that will provide affordable housing but also supportive services to our most vulnerable in our community. DeeDee is not a stranger to Christ Church; she was our guest preacher several years ago. On July 30, she will be helping us in three ways:
a. She will be our presenter at our Adult Forum at 8:00 am in our Parish Hall on that day. In keeping with our emphasis in this summer's Forum classes, she will be speaking about homelessness in Fremont County. DeeDee knows more about this subject than anyone else. She will be more than willing to answer your questions!
b. She will be sharing with our whole congregation during sermon time on the subject of homelessness in a Christian perspective. Jesus himself was homeless, as he said, "the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." (Luke 9:58)
c. DeeDee has agreed to be interviewed by the videographer who will be at Christ Church on July 30 to make a short video about our parish, and in particular our outreach to the community (Laundry Love, Little Free Pantry, monetary support from Second Sunday Offerings and ECW Thrift House proceeds, etc.) DeeDee will relate how important Laundry Love is to our community.
2. Mike Orr is the Director of Communications for the Episcopal Church in Colorado. Mike has helped churches throughout our diocese to develop logos, web sites, newsletters, etc. He came to Christ Church, Canon City last winter to speak with some of our own folk as well as others in our Sangre de Cristo Region. (It is because of Mike that we now have an e-Newsletter!) Mike is coordinating the production of short videos for churches in our diocese (a project that is heavily subsidized by our Diocese). The general topic of these videos this year is: "Engaging the world in love: reconciliation and grace.” Those who will be interviewed for this short video include DeeDee Clement (talking about the importance of Laundry Love to our community in general and her Shelter residents in particular), Scott & Alicia Vineyard, Bryan Fredrickson, Dr. Randy Ruggles (a homeless physician in town who has worked with us on Laundry Love), Sally Plaster, Fr. Mark, and perhaps a few others! If you would like to see some of these professional videos, click here and then scroll down.
The professional videographer will be "filming" around the church building, and will take some footage at our Laundry Love laundromat, Courtesy Coin Laundry.
